PD Bicultural Peer Support Worker

About CALD Mental Health Program 

This specialist mental health service for culturally and linguistically diverse communities, provided by STTARS, aims to enhance the mental well-being of adults from diverse backgrounds. This flexible and culturally sensitive program aims to offer mental health information, support for accessing services, low-intensity practical support for individuals and groups, and clinical care coordination for qualifying individuals.

About the position:

Reporting to the Clinical Lead, this role involves providing individual support to clients, delivering information on mental health services, and coordinating administrative tasks.

Key responsibilities:

Offer personalized support to clients, helping them set and achieve their recovery goals.

Accompany individuals to appointments as needed, serving as their supportive advocate and representative

Collaborate with interpreters to ensure clear and effective communication with clients, families, and caregivers.

Delivering information on mental health and guiding clients to access suitable services

Assisting with intake and assessment processes by providing personal support, cultural insights, and necessary assistance

Ad-hoc admin duties as required

Qualifications/experience:

Must have completed or be willing to complete while working a Certificate IV in Mental Health/ Mental Health Peer Work/ equivalent Human Services or Community Services qualification of Certificate IV level or above; (essential)

Lived experience/demonstrated knowledge of the challenges faced by people from a migrant, refugee or asylum seeker background.

Bilingual in a language of one or more of STTARS’ target groups (Dari/Hazaragi, Swahili, or French)

Demonstrated experience working with interpreters

Demonstrated experience in accessing and navigating mental health services

Additional requirements:

Experience working within a culturally diverse setting

Knowledge of the refugee/human rights sector or other community service areas and/or experience in a not-for-profit environment.

Intake Officer

About the role

Reporting to the Clinical Services Manager, the critical role of Intake Officer ensures clients are appropriately assessed, triaged and connected with appropriate services based on their needs.

PD Intake Officer

Key responsibilities:

Serve as the first point of contact for referrers and potential clients, providing a welcoming and culturally sensitive intake experience. 

Conduct thorough intake interviews and assessments to identify the unique needs and risks of clients, facilitating appropriate support.

Efficiently manage referrals and maintain a structured waiting list for the Program to Assist Survivors of Torture and Trauma (PASTT).

Maintain accurate, up-to-date client records and document assessment results, adhering to agency standards and contractual requirements.

Foster relationships with external stakeholders to ensure effective communication and clear referral pathways, adapting to the evolving needs of clients and the organization.

Coordinate and lead triage and allocation meetings. 

Qualifications/experience:

Tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology or a related health or social science discipline or equivalent experience.

Understanding and sensitivity in the provision of support to people from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds including people who do not speak English. 

Well-developed knowledge and understanding of refugee experiences and the impacts of trauma. 

Demonstrated experience in computer literacy and managing client information systems, maintaining accurate documentation and data collection. 

Previous experience in conducting psycho-social assessments and risk assessment (e.g., risk of suicide). (desirable)

Additional requirements:

Experience working within a culturally diverse setting.
